Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus is found in areas outside of the uterus such as the ovaries, ligaments supporting the uterus and the peritoneum or lining of the abdomen. In some cases it may also be seen over the bladder or rectum. Mild endometriosis may be asymptomatic, however it may also present with period pain (dysmenorrhoea), pain with intercourse (dyspareunia) and in more severe cases pain may occur when using the bowels. In some situations endometriosis may be associated with reduced fertility but this is not always the case.

Not all pelvic pain is caused by endometriosis. During your consultation a history will be taken to determine the nature of your symptoms. The questionnaire below is a good starting point and it would be helpful if this could be completed prior to your consultation. It is likely that you will require a gynaecological examination to more precisely locate the origin of your pain. A vaginal ultrasound may be performed to exclude any other causes of pelvic pain such as an ovarian cyst. If your history suggests a possibility of endometriosis then you may be advised to have a laparoscopy – this is a ‘keyole’ surgical procedure to look inside the abdominal and pelvic cavities. Endometriosis can only be diagnosed at laparoscopy and if this is suggested the risks and benefits of the procedure will be discussed at the time of consultation. Endometriosis can also be treated with laparoscopic surgical techniques. There are also a number of medical and hormonal treatments available to alleviate the symptoms caused by endometriosis.
